Kristi Noem said Donald Trump was “exactly right” to want states in charge of abortion access in America. For Noem, Scott and others in consideration to become Trump’s running mate, the former president’s latest contortions around abortion present a new challenge as they compete for his attention. Trump angered several anti-abortion leaders this week by refusing to back a federal abortion ban while embracing exceptions that Republicans throughout the country have for years opposed as morally questionable. But for a party that has long defined life as beginning at conception, Trump’s latest evolution on abortion will test those aspiring to run with him. “That’s just a fact.”Rubio was an early co-sponsor of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham’s bill to ban abortion nationwide 15 weeks into a pregnancy.

CNN —Donald Trump made an unexpected declaration Tuesday when probed about a six-week abortion ban that will soon take effect in his home state of Florida. “We’ll be making a statement next week on abortion,” the former president told reporters in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Other close advisers, however, have expressed concern that Trump will give further ammunition to Democrats by supporting any new restrictions on abortion. “It was bound to happen at some point where he needed to clarify his position,” a Trump adviser told CNN. Ron DeSantis was courting the state’s evangelical community by running to Trump’s right on the issue.

CNN —In the classic 1999 film, “Election,” the high school student government vote has everything: naked ambition, campaign poster shredding, ballot manipulation, infidelity and more. But what the gifted writer Tom Perotta likely couldn’t imagine was an election in which two unpopular candidates square off for president. That doesn’t happen in high school, even in a satirical movie. The president supports stripping that state of its first-in-the-nation primary status in favor of South Carolina, the state that energized Biden’s 2020 campaign. “In the runup to the 2024 elections, Democrats plan to put the Supreme Court on trial,” wrote David Mark.

While all of the candidates gave a nod to the “pro-life” movement, some stopped short of supporting Sen. Lindsey Graham’s, R-S.C., proposal for a 15-week federal abortion ban, which he has called on the GOP presidential candidates to support. Pence was the only candidate to specifically support Graham's bill on the first day of the conference. Ramaswamy has previously said he does not support a federal abortion ban. He said he plans to sign a federal abortion ban if elected president. Ron DeSantisDeSantis stuck by the six-week state abortion ban he signed in April, but he would not engage on Graham's proposal for a 15-week federal ban.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) says his phone calls to Georgia’s secretary of state were privileged legislative activity. WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court Tuesday denied Sen. Lindsey Graham ’s emergency plea to avoid cooperation with a Georgia grand jury investigating possible pro-Trump interference in the state’s 2020 vote count, but reiterated lower-court rulings that the South Carolina Republican could assert a privilege to specific questions he argues involve legislative activity. The Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis , had a special-purpose grand jury convened to investigate alleged efforts to subvert President Biden’s victory by pressuring state officials to falsify the outcome in Mr. Trump’s favor. Among other matters, Ms. Willis, a Democrat, is investigating at least two phone calls Mr. Graham made to Brad Raffensperger , Georgia’s Republican secretary of state and chief elections official, after the November 2020 election.
Businessman Joe O'Dea, the Republican Party's nominee in the Colorado Senate race, said Wednesday he is “not going to be owned by any party” as he responded to criticism from former President Donald Trump, who called him a RINO ("Republican In Name Only"). He’s entitled to that, but I'm like most Americans, we want to move the country forward,” O’Dea told Meet the Press Now, “I’m not going to be owned by any party. I’m going to vote for Colorado first.”Trump’s comments came a day after O’Dea said he would actively campaign against him in 2024. But he lamented what happened that day and repeated his opposition to seeing Trump on the ballot next year. “Look, President Trump’s going to do what President Trump wants to do.
